Welcome to the Nourish International Project Peru blog! Here's a bit of background:
Project Description:
Nourish will be partnering with the non-profit, M.O.C.H.E - Mobilizing Opportunities through Community Heritage Empowerment. MOCHE was started by a UNC professor of the archaeology department who runs a dig near the city each summer. Over the years, he has developed a relationship with the community and a sort of partnership worked out in which the community watches over the archaeological site when UNC is not there and helps protect it from looters, and in return, the diggers help with sustainable development projects in the community. Ciudad de Dios is a squatter settlement, thus, there is very little infrastructure. The community has asked MOCHE to help them create a system in which every household will have access to clean water (currently, of the 300 families, only half have a tap in their house that gives them untreated water).Nourish will be working with MOCHE and Carolina’s Engineers without Borders to help set up a water treatment center and a system of pipes. Specifically, students will work with the community’s water implementation committee on educating people as to why clean water is important and how to maintain a sustainable water system. Also, as there is currently no form of trash pick-up, Nourish will help collect trash into large 50-gallon containers, which will make it easier for the nearby municipal government to come collect. This project will also include a recycling program in which recycled materials are collected and the money earned from them will go into a community fund. By providing the community with clean water and a clean environment, this project will allow the people of Ciudad de Dios to live healthier, more productive lives.
