Interns work closely with full-time Nourish staff to expand and strengthen the organization’s capacity to deliver upon its mission to eradicate poverty by engaging students and empowering communities.

Positions are for the National Office of Nourish International (not the UNC Chapter), which is located at 133 ½ E. Franklin Street, suite 105, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

ABOUT NOURISH INTERNATIONAL
Nourish International is one of the Carolina Entrepreneurial Initiative's earliest success stories. Founded at UNC as "Hunger Lunch" in 2003 by Sindhura Citineni, Nourish International received inspiration and assistance from CEI's programs and community to develop into a nonprofit venture. It incorporated in 2006 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit focused on eradicating poverty worldwide. Nourish now works with students on 25 campuses in the United States. This summer, Nourish sent 65 students to work on community development projects with partners in 12 communities worldwide. THE POSITIONS

Public Relations Intern
Position Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director, this volunteer will work side by side with Nourish staff using social media, email marketing, and publicity campaigns to raise awareness about the organization within current supporters and new target audiences. A particular emphasis will be placed upon helping lead the outreach for Nourish International’s fall Masquerade Ball and Chairman’s Reception.
Commitment: 10 hours a week
Skills needed: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to establish and maintain strong professional relationships, strengths in event organizing and planning

Assistant to the Executive Director Intern
Position Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Assistant to the Executive Director will work on various fundraising related initiatives, such as helping launch a phone-a-thon and direct mail campaign, thanking donors for support, maintaining database records and assisting with grant research and writing. This position is ideal for people interested in gaining experience in grant writing and non-profit management.
Commitment: 10 hours a week
Skills needed: Strong written and oral communication skills, initiative, and follow through are a must. Experience with mail-merge, salesforce.com, database research, grant writing, or other fundraising skills a plus.

International Projects Intern
Position Summary: Reporting to the Chapter Coordinator, The International Projects Intern will support our student chapters in forming responsible, impactful partnerships with community based development organizations abroad. Position will work on creating resources for Nourish students who travel abroad. An interest in global development and international affairs is vital for this position. Experience working with marginalized populations is a major plus.
Commitment: 10 hours a week
Skills needed: Strong communication skills, research and organizational abilities. Ability to work well with others.

Web and Marketing Intern
Position Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Intern will work closely with nourish staff in assisting with web and graphics projects. Here at Nourish we use a CMS called Drupal. Basic knowledge and prior work with this system is preferable.
Commitment: 10 hours a week
Skills needed:
Requirements:
• Solid understanding of HTML concepts, with examples of past projects
• Basic experience working with CSS.
• Aptitude towards problem solving
• Interest in learning new skills, technologies
Plusses:
• Image processing experience
• Project management experience
• Experience with Salesforce.com and Google AdWords

Many thanks to Jim Kitchen, one of our newest Board members, for his lead on the space, and to Neil Bagchi and Doug Cook for their help with the lease and negotiations.  Rent is cheaper, the location is closer to the UNC campus (makes getting interns easier), and we butt up against the Franklin Business Center, a sweet little incubator for recent college graduates starting ventures.  The only problem we faced with the new space (in addition to having lots of stuff to move into it from our old office) was the condition of the place.  It was a bit of a mess.

Thankfully, one of our new neighbors, Sweeps, is a start-up that hires out hard-working college students for a very reasonable rate.  After a day or so of hauling out junk and painting, we are now the proud tenants of a beautiful space.

The impact of a new office may seem pretty removed from combating global poverty, I'll admit, but let me take a moment to explain its significance.  At the end of the chain is a community abroad that, this summer, right now, has just been empowered with greater access to what it needs to support its members (clean water, a new cottage industry, etc.).  That community empowerment arose out of a Partnership between a team of Nourish International students and a community based organization abroad, which included a donation of both financial support and labor for the project.  The student team, in turn, was the result of a year of planning and running revenue generating Ventures by a Nourish Chapter on a U.S. college campus.  Finally, the existence and continued success of that campus chapter, and 24 others like it, has roots in the work of our National Office.  Our weekly one-on-one mentoring phone calls, Summer Institute, and other forms of support we provide help make the movement possible.  No office space = no national office, and the rest of the chain I just described gets placed in jeopardy.  Capacity building work is, by nature, a step or two removed from the actual work on the ground of combating global poverty.  It is, though, incredibly important.  Like leaven in bread dough, just a little investment in capacity building can make the whole mass rise.

Health of Nourish International’s Chapter Network

•Nourish started the year with chapters on 24 college campuses

•83% of these chapters will continue on next year

•68% of chapters are sending at least one delegate to the Summer Institute, bringing total attendance numbers up to 26.

Venture Success

•Over 150 students served in executive leadership positions in their chapters this year, with a much larger population of students actively engaging with Nourish's work •Total profits for chapter ventures (revenue minus expenses) were just over $65,000

Project Success

•Nourish chapters sent a total of eleven technical assistance teams abroad and invested a total of $45,000 in community based development projects in other countries.

Humbled by how incredibly blessed my family and I have been, I am devoting more of my time and talents to helping others achieve their goals. Having learned some of the most important lessons of my life while sleeping in grass huts in Nicaragua and building rooms and schools in Costa Rica, Nourish International’s social/entrepreneurial mission speaks clearly to me. My foreign travel, study and business experiences have taught me invaluable lessons on respecting the cultural differences of our global community and provide a unique perspective into what Nourish can and will achieve in the future.
