Death and Taxes (perhaps also death due to taxes…)

Nourish International has an incredibly exciting mission. Working with motivated organizations (both on campuses and in developing communities) means a fast paced work environment requiring unique solutions at almost every turn.

However, there's one organization we're forced to work with that doesn't exactly move at our pace. You guessed it, the IRS.

Now with all due respect to Mike Huckabee, I'm not saying the IRS isn't necessary. But as I work through Nourish's 2007 taxes, I'm amazed that any non-profit work ever gets done. By my count, by page 7 of the form 990, I've already calculated our income once and our expenses twice... And now I'm getting ready to answer questions about the income again. And not to nit pick, but the instructions on these bad boys aren't exactly clear.

For a small and growing company like ourselves, committed first and foremost to our mission, it's tough to justify spending money having someone else do this for us; at the same time, it's tough to spare the time. And from the government's perspective, these things must be regulated, lest 501 (c) 3 organizations become giant tax umbrellas. But that doesn't mean it can't be done better.

All right, enough grumbling. I've got to finish these taxes.

(Special thanks goes to Kasey from KPMG who's going to check over them for me!)
